The EastWest Institute in partnership with the China Association for International Friendly Contact convened a smaller-group meeting of the U.S. – China Sanya Initiative, sponsored by the China-United States Exchange Foundation, which was held from December 15 to 17, 2017 in Beijing, China. Retired American and Chinese senior flag officers met and discussed in great depth critical issues of mutual concern and interest impacting the U.S. – China military-to-military relationship, including North Korea nuclear and missile issues and counterterrorism. Other issues were also discussed such as U.S. – China strategic relations and Chinese perspectives on global governance. Shortly following the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, this smaller-group meeting afforded timely opportunities for substantive exchanges regarding developments on the Korean Peninsula and within the Chinese leadership.
