On April 28, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York when attending the open ministerial meeting of the UN Security Council on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.

Wang Yi first conveyed kind greetings from Chinese leaders to António Guterres. Wang Yi said that His Excellency has brought new vitality, new ways of thinking and new measures to the UN since he became the UN Secretary-General. China supports multilateralism with the UN as the center. In face of the current situation featuring changes and unrests, the UN as the most authoritative and credible international organization should play a more important role in safeguarding the world peace and security, and promoting the development of mankind.

Wang Yi said that in January this year, President Xi Jinping delivered the important speech of jointly building a community of shared destiny at the Palace of Nations in Geneva and sent the epochal tone of win-win cooperation to the world. The "Belt and Road" initiative is a good attempt to rebalance the process of economic globalization and propel the joint construction of a community of shared destiny, gaining wide support from the international community. The Chinese side welcomes Mr. Secretary-General to come to China for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) and hopes to send a positive signal of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation to the international community through this forum. China is also willing to take this opportunity to strengthen cooperation with the UN and all parties in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, climate change and other areas.

António Guterres said that he is expecting to come to China for the BRF. China firmly supports the UN and multilateralism, actively advocates globalization and free trade, and makes positive contributions to safeguarding world peace, security and prosperity. The UN Secretariat attaches great importance to the cooperation with China. A series of suggestions and measures proposed by China such as the "Belt and Road" initiative, the construction of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank highly match with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the agreement on climate change. It is expected that China could play a bigger role in international affairs.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
