On April 28, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of the US in New York when attending the open ministerial meeting of the UN Security Council on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump held historical meetings at Mar-a-Lago and achieved a full success. China-US relations have achieved stable transition, initiated a good starting at a new point and sent a positive signal to the world that China and the US are willing to join hands to make contributions to the wellbeing of the two peoples and to the world peace. Close exchanges between the two heads of state have played an important leading role in the development of bilateral relations. The two sides should keep close cooperation and make sound preparations for President Donald Trump's state visit to China this year. China and the US have established four high-level dialogue mechanisms. Both sides should launch them at an early date and push forward for more consensuses, manage and control differences so as to ensure a healthy and stable development of China-US relations in a new period.

The US spoke highly of the important meetings between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago, which ensured a successful transition of US-China relations and boosted mutual trust. The US was encouraged that both sides have carried out cooperation in international and regional issues such as the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue in a constructive manner. Both sides agreed that the open ministerial meeting held by the UN Security Council is necessary and timely in the face of the escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula. All parties agreed that the current situation in the Korean Peninsula has formed a challenge, reaffirmed the goal of realizing denuclearization, committed to strictly following the UN Security Council resolutions and meanwhile, stick to solving the nuclear issue through dialogues and consultations via peaceful means so as to ease the current tensions in Korean Peninsula.
