TOKYO, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The benchmark Nikkei stock index was essentially flat Wednesday morning as investors bought back issues previously oversold after a sluggish start, as trade and other global economic issues continued to weigh.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 5.98 points, or 0.03 percent, from Tuesday to 20,631.14.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 4.62 points, or 0.31 percent, at 1,506.17.

Miscellaneous product and pharmaceutical issues led notable advancers, while metal product, and iron and steel issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
