Cyprus reaffirms excellent relations with Lebanon

Visiting Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades reaffirmed Tuesday the excellent relations with Lebanon, saying both countries will cooperate in offshore oil and gas exploration in their respective maritime zones.

Following meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Anastasiades said in a joint press conference "we are delighted because we had the chance to cover all issues which interrelated of our mutual interest especially energy, economy, the problems of the region, the Cyprus question, the Middle East question and the situation in Syria which is a tragedy."

He also welcomed the fact that "once again we have reaffirmed our excellent relations and determination to strengthen these relations," underscoring finding new ways to strengthen cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Lebanon.

For his part, Berri said the discussion focused on the issue of oil and the economic zone for the sea and the oil wealth.

Anastasiades arrived in Beirut on Sunday for a four-day official visit. He met with President Michel Aoun on Monday, who called for increased cooperation between the two countries in the oil and gas sector.

He is expected to meet with Prime Minister Saad Hariri later in the evening.
