BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's latest economic figure shows that the sultanate's overall CPI (Consumer Price Index) decreased by 0.7 percent year-on-year in June this year.

The latest statistics from the Department of Economic Planning and Development under the Ministry of Finance and Economy shows that the price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages and non-food items decreased in June 2019 by 0.5 percent and 0.7 percent respectively. Meanwhile, the Goods index has recorded a decrease of 1.6 percent, while the Services index increased by 0.6 percent.

The CPI decrease was largely attributed to decreases in the prices and costs of Transport (4.0 percent); Clothing and Footwear (2.6 percent); and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels (2.0 percent).

However, this was moderated by increases in the prices and costs of Restaurants and Hotels (4.5 percent); Recreation and Culture (1.9 percent); and Education (0.3 percent).

CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period. Brunei's list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household.
