The first fleet of electric taxis was introduced in Albanian capital Friday.
Tirana Mayor Erjon Veliaj told reporters at the presentation ceremony that electric vehicles serving as taxis were currently considered as one of the most promising alternatives in Tirana due to cleanness, zero carbon emissions and low cost.
According to Veliaj, the introduction of electric taxis is part of a city-wide strategy to improve sustainable transportation.
He called on citizens to start using electric taxis as an alternative to traditional, polluting vehicles.
"Tirana Municipality has licensed around 800 taxis that cause over 3,200 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year. Therefore, I'm pleased to introduce the first fleet of 100 percent electric taxis," Veliaj said.
He vowed to revolutionize the city's public transport starting with testing new electric buses.
"A new fleet of electric buses will be introduced soon as part of the municipal plans to transform the city's public transport and significantly reduce pollution," Veliaj told reporters.
