Libyan and Italian navies will seek to enhance technical cooperation during the current visit by an Italian naval delegation, the Libyan Navy said on Friday.

"Commander-in-Chief of Italian Naval Fleet Donato Marzano on Thursday arrived in Tripoli to discuss technical and logistic cooperation between Libyan and Italian navies," Libyan Navy's spokesman Ayob Qasem said in a statement to Xinhua.

During Marzano's visit, the two navies will discuss issues including technically developing Libyan naval infrastructure by Italian specialist teams, and increasing Italy's support for Libyan naval forces and coast guards, Qasem added.

In August, an Italian navy ship, Comandante Borsini, visited the Libyan capital Tripoli with a group of technical experts on board, aiming to boost cooperation in fighting illegal immigration and to provide training to Libyan coast guards.

Due to the state of insecurity and chaos in Libya, thousands of immigrants have fled from Libya to Italian shores, many of whom have drown halfway in the Mediterranean.
