Number of unemployed people hits 27-year low in June in Portugal

LISBON, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The number of unemployed registered in job centers in June was below 300,000 people for the first time in 27 years, the Portuguese Ministry of Labor announced on Wednesday.

According to data released by Institute of Employment and Vocational Training, the number of unemployed registered in employment services in June 2019 decreased to 298,200 people, down 10.3 percent year on year from a year ago, and down 2.3 percent compared with the previous month.

In a statement, the ministry revealed that the unemployment number below 300,000 happened in December 1991, when there were 296,600 registered unemployed.

The ministry said that under the current government which will finish its term in October, registered unemployment fell 46.3 percent, with 60.0 percent drop in youth unemployment and 48.1 percent of long-term unemployment.

"These results, in line with the data being observed by the National Institute of Statistics, reflect the good performance of the economy, the dynamism of the labor market and the implementation of active employment policies," said the statement.
