LONDON, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The sales of the main supermarkets in Britain struggled to grow during the three months to August 11, according to figures issued Tuesday by market research firm Kantar.
The latest Grocery Market Share data showed that the biggest supermarket Tesco, accounting for 27 percent of market share in Britain, dropped 1.6 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, the total sales of Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons, ranking the second, third, fourth in terms of market shares, fell by 0.6 percent, 1.5 percent and 2.7 percent respectively, compared with the same period a year earlier.
Compared with the big four supermarkets, other medium or small supermarkets performed better.
Lidl's sales increased by 7.7 percent, with the German discounter reaching a record market share of 5.9 percent.
In addition, the sales of Aldi grew by 6.2 percent, driven by an increase in the bakery products sales.
"The memory of last year still looms large for retailers and this summer's comparatively poor weather, combined with low levels of like-for-like price rises, have made growth hard to find for retailers," said Fraser McKevitt, head of Retail and Consumer Insight at Kanta.
