Japan's industrial production in August increased 2.1 percent from a month earlier, the government said in a report on Friday.
The latest rise in factory output comes on the heels of a 0.8 percent drop in July.
The seasonally adjusted index of output at factories and mines stood at 103.6 against the base of 100 for 2010, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said in a preliminary report.
The index of industrial shipments rose 1.8 percent to 101.8 and that of inventories was down 0.6 percent at 107.2, the ministry said.
