Chinese shares close lower Thursday

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's major stock indices rose before retreating on Thursday, with shares of the gold sector and 5G-related companies surging and the coal chemical industry dropping.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained more than 1 percent by early afternoon but then went down to finish at 2,751.8, down 0.34 percent. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.26 percent lower at 8,451.71.

The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 618.7 billion yuan (about 92.3 billion U.S. dollars), up from 499.2 billion yuan the previous trading day.

The gold and 5G sectors were among the biggest winners, with Yantai Yuancheng Gold Co. Ltd. up 5.33 percent and Huizhou Speed Wireless Technology Co. Ltd. increasing by the daily limit of 10 percent.

The coal chemical industry recorded the greatest loss, with China Coal Energy Company Limited falling 1.23 percent.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, gained 0.3 percent to close at 1,412.54.
