BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ending at 3,198.59 points, down 0.51 percent.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.97 percent lower at 10,124.66 points.
The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 324.9 billion yuan (about 48.43 billion U.S. dollars), declining from 804.3 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,114 to 319 at the Shanghai bourse and 1,695 to 410 in Shenzhen.
Shares of breeding industry were among the biggest gainers. Liaoning Wellhope Agri-Tech Joint Stock Co., Ltd. saw its share price rise by the daily 10 percent limit to 13.86 yuan a share.
Jiangsu Tongguang Electronic Wire & Cable Co., Ltd. led the losses to drop by the daily limit 10 percent, ending at 11.21 yuan per share.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, went down 0.81 percent to close at 1,683.80 points Tuesday.
